Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove

The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is located half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, just off Hwy-1. I knew about this location, but I thought I was too late in the season to witness this amazing start of the Monarch butterfly migration. At the time of our visit there were around 7000 butterflies in the eucalyptus tree grove! The average colony size is around 25000 at the peak, but this year they estimate it was upwards of 80000! We missed the peak by two weeks 🙁 These pacific coast Monarchs are different from the east coast. The east coast Monarchs start their migration in Mexico where as these start in the Central Coast California region.

They were beautiful and we are thankful that we got the chance to see them.
